LOS ANGELES – Swedish hip-hop artist David Moses Jassy was
convicted today of second-degree murder in the 2008 road rage
incident in Hollywood that left a pedestrian dead.
The Los Angeles Superior Court jury of seven women and five men
deliberated a day-and-a-half before finding Jassy, 35, guilty of the
Nov. 23, 2008, murder of John Osnes. The jury also found Jassy
guilty of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and
guilty of battery with serious bodily injury. The jury found him not
guilty of assault with a deadly weapon, a car, and not guilty of
leaving the scene of an accident.
Deputy District Attorney Sarika Kapoor prosecuted the case. “This
was a just verdict,” she said. “The attack in this case was brutal
and unprovoked.”
Osnes, a 55-year-old jazz pianist, was crossing the street at
Schrader Boulevard and Selma Avenue on foot when the rental SUV
Jassy was driving stopped inside the crosswalk. Witnesses testified
that when Osnes hit the hood of Jassy’s vehicle with his hands,
Jassy got out and punched the victim in the face. As Osnes bent over
to pick up his glasses, Jassy kicked him in the head.
Jassy then drove away despite attempts to stop him by witnesses,
including an off-duty Anaheim police officer. His rental car drove
over the victim’s body as he left, authorities said.
An autopsy revealed the victim sustained fatal injuries both from
the kick to the head and being run over.
Jassy faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced March
4 by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson.
