LOS ANGELES – The operator of a property tax reassessment business accused of misleading consumers by using mail solicitations that appeared governmental today was sentenced to 250 hours of community service immediately after pleading guilty.

Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Nakaki of the Consumer Protection Division said Sean McConville, 29, pleaded guilty to a dozen misdemeanor counts of disclosure violation for unsolicited mailing.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ronald Rose also sentenced the defendant to three years summary probation and ordered him to pay restitution pursuant to any civil judgment. McConville faces a potential maximum of six years in county jail should he violate the terms of his probation.

McConville, owner of Property Tax Reassessment, was charged in May 2009 following an investigation by local and state officials involving about a dozen private companies that offered to assist homeowners with filing property tax reassessment forms for substantial fees.

The state Attorney General’s Office has a pending civil action with the defendant.
