April 16, 2018: Montebello Man Charged in Bus Stabbing Case

A 27-year-old man was charged today with the stabbing of a passenger on a Montebello transit bus, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Manuel Ortiz Jr. aka Chubbs (dob 9/16/90) of Montebello faces one felony count each of attempted murder and aggravated mayhem.

Arraignment in case BA467237 was scheduled today but was continued to May 9 in Department 30 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Ortiz is charged with stabbing the 23-year-old man multiple times on the neck and head on April 9 at the Montebello Bus Lines stop on Whittier Boulevard and Gerhart Avenue in East Los Angeles, prosecutors said.

If convicted as charged, Ortiz faces a possible maximum sentence of 35 years to life in state prison. Bail was set at more than $1 million.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
