January 21, 2014: Man Charged in Fatal Subway Stabbing

A North Hollywood man was charged today with fatally stabbing a passenger on the Metro Red Line subway, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Angelo Correa (dob 9/9/89) is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, Department 30. He is charged in case BA420480 with one count of murder with the special allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon, a folding knife.

Correa allegedly got into a verbal dispute with a fellow passenger about 9:20 a.m. Jan. 13 while the train was at the Vermont station. Correa allegedly walked away before turning around, walking back and fatally stabbing Jose Velasco, 33. Prosecutors are asking that the defendant’s bail be set at $1 million.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigated the case.
