August 3, 2018: Man Charged with Capital Murder in Gardena, Lynwood Shootings

A man was charged today with capital murder in connection with a pair of shootings in Gardena and Lynwood that killed two people and injured two others, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Selvin Fabian Salazar (dob 9/7/92) of Inglewood faces two counts of murder along with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. He additionally is charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count each of dissuading a witness by force or threat, carjacking, kidnapping and possession of a firearm by a felon, all felonies.

The complaint in case YA097896 also includes allegations that the defendant inflicted great bodily injury and death, personally used a handgun, committed the crime in association with a criminal street gang and had a prior felony conviction.

He is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon in Department 4 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

In the early hours of July 31, Salazar was in Gardena where he allegedly fired multiple shots at a vehicle, striking two people seated inside and a third who was outside, prosecutors said. The driver of the car, Dolores Sanchez, was killed, and a male passenger was injured.

Salazar then allegedly fled the scene with a couple in their vehicle. The defendant is accused of subsequently fatally shooting the man, Francisco Montes, and attempting to kill Montes’ wife in Lynwood near a freeway on-ramp.

He allegedly left the victims on the side of the road and drove away, prosecutors said.

He faces a possible maximum sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole or death. A decision will be made at a later date on whether to seek the death penalty.

Prosecutors are requesting that bail be denied.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Homicide Bureau.
