A man has been charged with fatally stabbing another outside of an apartment complex nearly two weeks ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Jeffery Ardonal Johnson (dob 9/3/56) of Bellflower has been charged with one count of murder in case VA146860. The charging document includes a special allegation that the defendant personally used a deadly and dangerous weapon, a knife, during the commission of the crime.

The felony case was filed on Jan. 30. Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department J of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Norwalk Branch.

Prosecutors said Johnson and victim Anthony Maurice Elston, 24, knew of each other because Elston’s sister lived in the same Bellflower apartment complex as the defendant.

On the evening of Jan. 27, Johnson and Elston reportedly got into a physical altercation outside of the apartment complex, according to prosecutors.

During the fight, Johnson allegedly pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Elston in the torso, prosecutors said. Johnson then reportedly left the scene but came back to turn himself into law enforcement, prosecutors added.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a maximum possible sentence of 26 years to life in prison.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
