A Pomona man was charged today with trying to kill his former girlfriend in La Verne over the weekend, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Brandon Browner (8/2/84) was charged in case KA118551 with one count each of attempted murder, first-degree residential robbery, first-degree burglary, person present, and false imprisonment. He also faces two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to a child.

He made his initial court appearance today but arraignment was continued until July 30 in Department N of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Pomona Branch.

Deputy District Attorney Kelsey McKeever-Unger is prosecuting the case.

On July 8, Browner is accused of breaking into a former girlfriend’s apartment in La Verne. He allegedly chased the victim, dragged her and then smothered her in a carpet. Her two children were present when the alleged abuse occurred.

Browner, a former NFL cornerback, also is accused of stealing the victim’s Rolex watch. He fled the residence but was later arrested.

Bail has been set at $10 million. If convicted as charged, Browner faces a possible maximum life sentence in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the La Verne Police Department.
