A San Pedro man was charged today with killing a 20-year-old woman whose body was found on Malaga Cove Beach in 1980, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Robert Yniguez (dob 12/5/51) was charged in case YA096953 with one count of murder with the special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a rape, making him eligible for the death penalty.

He is scheduled to be arraigned today in Department 4 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Torrance Branch.

Deputy District Attorneys Allyson Ostrowski and David Zygielbaum are prosecuting the case.

On March 4, 1980, a surfer discovered the body of 20-year-old Teresa Broudreaux. She was naked, only wearing socks, and was bleeding from her head. Broudreaux died from blunt force trauma and was pregnant, the prosecutors said.

DNA evidence found on the victim’s body allegedly linked Yniguez to the murder. He was arrested on Thursday.

If convicted, Yniguez faces the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole. A decision on whether to seek the death penalty will be made at a later date.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
