A 46-year-old man was found guilty today of the murder of a grocer nearly 27 years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Deputy District Attorney Marna Miller said Marcus Lynn Perkins aka Tyrone Mullins was found guilty of first-degree murder with a special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a robbery and allegations of personal use of a firearm.

Perkins will face a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole at a hearing on Aug. 4 in Department 103 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

On July 24, 1990, the defendant entered a small market near San Pedro and 65th streets and robbed the store owner at gunpoint, according to evidence presented at trial. The victim, Timoteo Peña, 42, armed himself in self-defense but was killed by Perkins who shot Peña six times, the prosecutor said.

The evidence presented in court included testimony from the victim’s daughter who was 9 years old at the time of the crime and witnessed the killing and DNA that led to Perkins’ arrest shortly after he got out of prison in 2013 for an unrelated robbery.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.
